The Montana Shooting Sports Association, led by Gary Marbut, is not to be trifled with when it comes to gun rights. And to prove it, the organization is flexing its muscle by putting up more than 700 signs along Montana’s vast highway system to warn voters against election Bullock to the U.S. Senate.
In 2014, the Montana Standard wrote of then-Senator Max Baucus, “Baucus also will be remembered for the stir he created in the early 1990s, when he voted twice with gun-control advocates, for the 1993 ‘Brady bill’ that required federal background checks on gun purchases and the 1994 ban on assault-style firearms…Orange ‘Ban Baucus’ signs from gun-rights groups sprouted up across the state, and Baucus faced his toughest re-election fight in 1996.”
That aforementioned gun-rights group was the Montana Shooting Sports Association and they are going old-school in their opposition to new senatorial candidate, Governor Steve Bullock. And if Marbut has anything to do with it, he won’t become Senator Steve Bullock.
Marbut stated in an October 3 email to MSSA members that he has received reports of a number of conservative signs around the states and warns people not to take the law into their own hands. He wrote, “Just to be on the record about this…if you catch someone stealing or destroying your ‘Ban Bullock’ sign, I urge and recommend that you NOT shoot them. That is MSSA’s official position. I’d rather replace signs. I do recommend that you immediately report any sign vandalism to your local sheriff. There may not be much your sheriff can do about sign vandalism, but it would be good to have the report on record.”
He then recommended that if someone feels their sign may be vandalized to follow the advice of MSSA Vice President Randy Pinocci and find second-hand or inexpensive trail cameras to place up at location.
If someone wants a “Ban Bullock” sign, they can send an email to mssaATmtssaDOT.org and tell them how many of which size and provide their name and mail address. It would also be helpful, if possible, to cover the cost of the signs by mailing a check ($20 for each 4′ X 8′ sign and $10 for each 4′ X 4′ sign) to P.O. Box 4924 in Missoula, Montana (59806).
Additionally, if someone wants to use a credit card they can call Bass at Bass’s Gun Rack in Missoula at (406) 543-4867 during normal business hours and they will handle it over the phone.
