As previously covered by Montana Daily Gazette, HB 258, authored by Gary Marbut of the Montana Shooting Sports Association, caused a flurry of calls to sheriff departments across the state when it was tabled earlier this month. However, HB 258 was removed from the table and has now passed a second reading in the Montana House.

Looking to limit federal control over Montana citizens, HB 258 seeks to do the following:

PROHIBITING THE ENFORCEMENT OF A FEDERAL BAN ON OR REGULATION OF FIREARMS, MAGAZINES, AMMUNITION, AMMUNITION COMPONENTS, OR FIREARM ACCESSORIES.

Passing along party lines with a 67-33 vote, HB 258 looks like a sure bet to pass the Third Reading and to then move on to the Montana Senate to engage in another round of readings there.

With the Biden Administration’s recent rhetoric and unapologetic attacks on the nation’s gun owners, HB 258 is a vital step in eliminating the threat of unconstitutional federal overreach in Montana and a shield to protect Montana gun owners.

Montana Daily Gazette wishes to recognize the great work of Gary Marbut from Montana Shooting Sports Association for many of the outstanding pro-second amendment bills that have been signed into law in Montana.
