SD Governor Inflames Conservative Base Over Rejecting Transgender Sports Bill

From Todd Starnes

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is under fire for saying she won’t sign the Fairness in Women’s Sports bill as it stands.

The Republican governor is getting backlash from conservatives for sending the bill back to the legislature Friday via a “style and form” veto.

“Unfortunately, as I have studied this legislation and conferred with legal experts over the past several days, I have become concerned that this bill’s vague and overly broad language could have significant unintended consequences,” Noem said in a letter rejecting the bill.

She added: “I am also concerned that the approach House Bill 1217 takes is unrealistic in the context of collegiate athletics.”

Noem, a potential GOP 2024 contender, proposed the bill be directed toward high school and elementary sports, but not collegiate athletics.

“This is incredibly disappointing for conservatives who were convinced Governor Noem would be the standard-bearer for the Republican party in the post-Trump era,” said best-selling author and radio host Todd Starnes. “But it turns out Gov. Noem is just another Republican in name only.”
