Yes, you have to be 18 to serve in office as a representative in Montana, one of only a handful of states where those under 21 or 25 may serve. But you don’t have to be 18 to run for office, so long as the 18th birthday rolls around before you take office.

Kaitlyn Ruch, a growingly popular star in the pro-life movement, has announced her candidacy for HD84. Currently, the seat – settled in the Helena area, is represented by who is arguably the most liberal member of the Montana legislature. We have written previously about Dunwell in the articles, Rep. Mary Ann Dunwell (D, Helena) Encourages Murder and Leads Women Astray, Mary Ann Dunwell Comes Out of Her Hole and Predicts Six More Weeks of Covid Season, Montana Democrat Demands Republic Colleague Remove Gun from His Personal Zoom Pics, and more.

Mostly, MDG just made good fun of Dunwell’s insistence to wear both a mask and face shield, calling her Darth Dunwell, as she developed the reputation as the most liberal legislator in Montana.

Ruch wrote on Facebook, “Friends, the time has come. We officially have an opponent in HD 84. While I am only 17 years old and have never run for elected office before, I view that as a positive. Our political system is working for so many people, meanwhile the same politicians continue to get elected over and over again while only serving their own interests.”

She continued, “My opponent has been serving in the Montana Legislature since 2002, 2 years before I was even born! I believe the people of House District 84 are ready for a new, young voice in the House, and that’s why I’m running. My slogan is ‘The Change We Need, the Voice You Deserve’ because I can step into the job and day 1 and bring a fresh perspective to the Montana Legislature.

Ruch has been gaining a national following in the pro-life movement for more than a year. The 17-year-old carries herself with poise, sophistication, and is articulate. And, because she doesn’t wear two masks and a face shield, you can understand what she’s saying when she speaks.

But is it possible for Ruch to win against such a longterm incumbent? You bet it is. Look at the figures from 2020.

Dunwell won by a meager 107 votes. Even with Jackson (D) serving as a spoiler, and assuming that all Jackson voters would vote for Dunwell, a margin of 291 votes is not anywhere close to impossible for Ruch to close the gap. And with a little luck and a lot of effort, her age might indeed develop the attention necessary to overthrow the triple-layered face of her opponent.
