In an act of rebellion against the scriptures, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kalispell has been for months hosting FLY Meetings (Flathead LGBT+ Youth)- a social gathering for teens ages 13-20 to have a safe space to get together to do arts and crafts, play games, and further explore their sexuality in an affirming manner. The event is hosted by Love Lives Here, the pre-eminent LGBTQ advocacy group in Montana designed to dismantle discrimination and promote acceptance.
While LGBTQ teens gathering and doing their own thing isn’t particularly noteworthy, the fact is that a so-called Christian church is no place to be doing it. Bethlehem Lutheran is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – one of the most progressive denominations in the country that is fully accepting of the LGBTQ lifestyle, as well as has capitulated on the issue of abortion and a mothers ‘right to choose.’
But Bethlehem Lutheran isn’t acting like a church. By hosting LGBTQ meetings for the youth, they are violating God’s scriptures and their own mission statement, which reads:
“We are a Christian community rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ that gathers to worship, learn, and share, and reaches out to welcome, witness, and serve.”
Not at all. If they were truly “rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ,” they would never host a meeting for LGBTQ youth designed to confirm and entrench them in their identities. It is entirely contrary to their stated mission. And also, “witnessing” would mean asking these teens to repent of that lifestyle and follow Christ, something the church has shown no intention to do. Romans 6:9-11 reads:
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Rather than homosexuality being lauded as a virtue, it is instead listed as a sin that Christ died for and which people can be forgiven for. By tolerating or promoting it as a good thing, the church is robbing them of the gospel.
When a church (any church) hosts meetings, it should not violate God’s principles. If members of Bethlehem Lutheran want to reach out to LGBTQ youth to help guide these young people into a real and abiding relationship with Jesus, they need to do so outside the church and not condone their sin, but help lead them to repentance and a knowledge of the Savior who will give them life abundantly.
If you or someone you know attends Bethlehem Lutheran or is just a concerned citizen please respectfully call or email them and guide them concerning this topic.
