Breaking! Ontario Govt Freezes Access To New Convoy Crowdfunding

Several days ago, under pressure from lockdown activists and progressive politicians, GoFundMe shut down their page for the Canadian ‘Freedom Convoy’ truckers protests, announcing that:

GoFundMe supports peaceful protests and we believe that was the intention of the Freedom Convoy 2022 fundraiser when it was first created. We now have evidence from law enforcement that the previously peaceful demonstration has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity.

In doing so, they took away nearly $10 million dollars in donations that had been raised, basically claiming that the fundraising violated their terms of service because the protesters were criminals, and they couldn’t in good conscience support giving money to criminals. This move prompted outrage from several prominent Republicans, with Ted Cruz and Ron Desantis both weighing in against Gofund Me, and several state attorney Generals threatening to investigate the crowdfunding giant for deceptive trade practices.

A new fund was started up through GiveSendGo, a Christian crowdfund that promised the money would reach its intended recipient, collecting over $10.5 million dollars.

Now, in a shocking move, Ontario’s Conservative Premier Doug Ford’s office asked the courts to seize this new money too, issuing the following statement just hours ago:

A fas as the reference to section 490.9, it’s a ” restraint order… in respect of any offense-related property” and as Ezra Levant pointed out ” It’s the kind of thing you’d use to seize a drug-dealer’s speedboat, or cash.”

In response, the Superior Court of Justice granted the request and has frozen access to these funds, with the spokesperson for the premier, Ivana Yelich, explaining that the order “binds any and all parties with possession or control over these donations.”

Premier Doug Ford, the leader of Ontario, was elected as a conservative populist, but quickly turned out to be one of the most ardent advocates for harsh lockdowns, vaccine passports and overbearing pandemic policies, and has been openly critical of the Freedom Convoy. This sort of dirty trick is absolutely up his alley.

In response to this threat, GiveSendGo was unequivocal that their efforts would be in vain and they would ignore the order, saying in a statement:

Bringing you conservative news and commentary means it is tough out there on social media. We’re constantly getting kneecapped and constrained by tech companies who find the truth intolerable, resulting in our reach being severely throttled.
