Op-Ed ‘Baby Formula Shortages’ and the Solution (A Natural Approach)

This Op-Ed was written by Brenda Roskos, who has more experience with babies than one could ever conceive.

With all the crazy ‘baby formula shortages, ‘ women need to think outside the box and get creative. There are multiple avenues to conquering this modern-day problem, even if the methods are ‘old school.’

Breast milk ‘donors’ often give away their precious extra milk or sell it. There are many women willing to do this, so be on the lookout for other nursing moms even if you’re unable to nurse, and don’t be shy about it. (The truth is that most women can nurse, but some just choose not to). Well, it’s time to get back to the basics.

Goat milk is a great option. Goat milk lacks iron and folic acid, so adding a wee bit of blackstrap molasses does the trick. A little bit of infant powdered acidophilus is helpful to help prevent constipation for babies. Often feed supply stores have phone numbers of local ‘goat people’ as do 4-H Extension offices. Even dried goat milk works well. (Meyenberg is a good, easy-to-find brand).

Then there are those ‘homemade recipes.’ There are several different ones making the rounds, but this one seems exceptionally well-rounded and healthy.

Below is an excellent ‘baby formula recipe.’

“2 cups raw grass-fed cow or goat milk OR organic whole milk yogurt
1 7/8 cups filtered water
1/4 cup liquid whey
4 Tbl lactose
1/4 tsp Bifidobacterium infantis powder
2-4 Tbl raw or pasteurized cream
1/2 tsp cod liver oil unflavored
1/4 tsp butter oil unflavored
1 tsp sunflower oil preferably organic
1 tsp extra virgin olive oil preferably organic
2 tsp virgin coconut oil preferably organic
2 tsp nutritional yeast
2 tsp gelatin
1/4 tsp acerola powder

The reality is baby formula is nasty stuff. The ingredients are harmful. Babies need nourishing healthy food. Yes, it takes a bit more effort, but that’s the reality of babies. This could be a blessing in disguise, especially if ‘milk donor mamas’ start replacing powdered formula.
